Not only is it easy to use, it's also a great alternative to Impress or PowerPoint for creating interesting documents. For examples, see RawTherapee screenshots.Īlthough you may not think of LibreOffice Draw as a professional desktop publishing solution, it can save you in many situations for example, if you are creating whitepapers, diagrams, or posters that other people (even those who don't know graphics software) can update later. It provides a very powerful engine and a non-destructive editor. You can use your camera in RAW mode, and then use RawTherapee to "develop" your picture. RawTherapee is the only completely cross-platform alternative to Lightroom I know of. See Made with Scribus for examples of documents created with this software.ĥ. Free trick: The first time you send a file, don't tell the printer the name of the software you used to create it. While printing companies may be used to files created with proprietary solutions like InDesign, if your Scribus file is done correctly, your printer won't have any issues. I count on Scribus when I send PDF files to a commercial printer. One feature I really like: You can simulate and check what people with visual disabilities will experience with a Scribus document. You can use Scribus to create a complete document, or just to convert a PDF from Inkscape or Libre Office from RGB to CMYK. So you have this beautiful Wacom drawing tablet on your desk, and you want to try a true digital painting application? Krita is what you need to create beautiful drawings and paintings. See GIMP Artists on DeviantArt for examples. You can also create and draw images from scratch, but GIMP is not my favorite tool for that. GIMP is my favorite application to edit images, including manipulating color, cropping and resizing, and (especially) optimizing file size for the web (many of my Photoshop-using colleagues ask me to do that last step for them). One drawback: it is not well optimized on Mac. (It can create CMYK images, but that's not the main aim.) It's a lifesaver for manipulating SVG maps and charts for web applications not only can you open files with the integrated XML editor, you can also see all of an object's parameters. Inkscape is a good vector graphics editor for creating SVG and PDF files in the RGB color space. Here are some of the open source applications I use, as well as the hardware I use with them. I create a lot of graphics for print and web, including logos, banners, video titles, and mockups. Note that the software applications in this article are not exact equivalents of well-known proprietary software, they'll require you to learn new applications, and you may need to modify your workflow, but learning new tools enables you to create differently. I've divided this list into graphics, audio, video, and animation solutions. All of the software on this list meets the following criteria: have some other reason to use open source A/V solutions (if this is you, share your reason in the comments).įortunately, there is a lot of open source software available for A/V creators, as well as hardware that supports those applications.want to discover new tools to fuel their creativity and don't want to use the same approaches or software everyone else uses or.are already open source enthusiasts, but are new to open source A/V software and want to know which options to trust.want to switch to GNU/Linux, but need to start slowly with cross-platform software on their regular operating system. There are a lot of reasons that people choose open source over proprietary options, and I've compiled this list of open source audio and video tools for people who: I have found plenty of great open source software that helps me do my job producing audio, video, print, and screen graphics. Fewer people know that open source is a great option for producing professional-level audio-visual materials.Īs a product owner and sometimes marketing support person, I produce a lot of content for end users: documentation, web articles, video tutorials, event booth materials, white papers, interviews, and more. Merrell’s MOAB walking shoes have been imitated across the board, but nothing holds up to the original. While not the most heavy-duty walking shoes on the market, if you aren’t preparing to ask too much out of your shoes, you can walk plenty of miles in these bad boys. One of the real stand-out features they mentioned to us was just how quick and easy they were to break in, which may be in part to how well they fit and how true to size our team felt they were.ĭay hikers and commuter-friendly, these budget shoes are built to handle everyday use with ease. Our team were super impressed by these boots and felt they ticked all the important boxes including being waterproof, comfortable, hardwearing and lightweight. For a walking boot that can handle every scenario, these shoes can accept any quest. While these boots will get you through days wandering through cities and staying comfortable through travel, they’re really built for getting out into the woods. Details like these make the shoes great for all-terrain hikes. No other boot on the market has combined a complete waterproof package with lightweight comfort built to last for thousands of miles. They’re definitely one of the best hiking boot brands out there at the moment.Ī high ankle helps keep your feet pointing forwards no matter where you are trekking, and Gore-Tex Performance technology protects the entire boot. Salomon has cranked out industry classic boots for over 70 years, and their flagship boots are so damn good that we’ve ranked them as the best overall walking boots for three straight years. Material: Nubuck Leather, Gore-Tex Contagrip Rubber. So, if you’re asking ” what are the most comfortable walking boots?”, well, let’s get into it and find out! Follow along as we dissect the best boots made for walking. Amassed from hikers, climbers, and risk-takers across the globe. This list of the best walking boots on the market is the result of my queries. To prevent your next trek from ending early, I spoke to every hiking expert in my address book, combining the knowledge of an entire team of wanderers who have walked thousands of miles in the right shoes. I’ve seen hikers walk for hours, only to turn around just before the summit, as their hiking shoes weren’t prepared for a surprise snowfall the night before. Low-quality walking boots won’t just provide frustration they can lead to injuries and quickly end trips before you get your rhythm going. While there may be tons of cheap walking boots on the market, you’ll quickly find that this is a part of your gear kit that you’ll want to invest in properly. Our broke backpacker collective has wandered across the ends of the earth, and none of us would have made it very far without the right walking boots protecting our feet. Whether you’re a day trekker or a through hiker, pairing your journey with the best walking boots on the market will allow you to go further and stay comfortable tramping from dawn to dusk. An all-terrain lifestyle requires all-terrain boots. If you’ve never played, give it a shot if the chance ever arrives (or your Japanese is pretty good). That pink-haired, pig-thumping jungle boy is at it again. While it does feel a bit shorter and sillier now, I still have fond memories and I am glad to know those memories aren’t just blinded in nostalgia. It stacks up pretty well against other PS1 classics, and everything still feels lovingly crafted and solid from most angles. It’s the little things that keep you going. Japanese games aren’t the luckiest when it comes to getting American voice actors to translate and stand in, but the game had me in tears of laughter and unadulterated mirth within the first level. Dear Poseidon in the sea, it is some of the most hilariously mismatched and goofy voice acting I’ve ever heard. While the evil pigs aren’t exactly bursting in complexity and rich back story (really, who is in this game?), they do make for some engaging and fun antagonists, especially as things go batshit insane near the end of the game.Īnd oh, that voice acting. The boss battles alone make up for the lackluster plot and vary in arena and difficulty. It’s not exactly the most stellar plot, but with all the fun mixed in, I honestly couldn’t care less. In order to beat the game, Tomba must fight each one of the evil pigs to break the curse and find Tabby. The story here is pretty standard of an early platformer: evil pigs kidnap Tomba’s friend and have put a curse on the various worlds. Now, I emerge the victor, with only a touch of shame!Īhem, continuing on. Ten years you’ve mocked me with your impossible trolley quest and Kujara washing. On this day, I shake my fist at thee, Tomba. It was one of two quests in Tomba 2 that actually took me years to beat with my awful hand-eye coordination. There’s ten levels to this game ten levels of increasing difficulty and madness. The hit detection has to be just spot on, otherwise the oversized cheeps will hit the wall and bounce off – not to mention you have to jump just right to catch them, or they’ll briefly stun you and you’ll lose precious seconds. Sounds simple enough, right? Ha ha, nope. The Kujara Ranch, the third world in the game, features a mini-game in which Tomba must toss the Kujara into washing machines before the time limit runs out. Tomba controls well, though the hit detection is sometimes a little too precise. Speaking of, the controls are still pretty impressive. Normally, this is something that can hinder or even ruin the experience, but it still holds strong as a gameplay element here. It’s one of the only games I’ve ever played that made back-tracking fun. While they don’t seem all that difficult now, my child brain was completely blown working out how to solve each and every one. That’s one thing I always really loved about Tomba 2: the puzzles and problem-solving elements. Even so, they are packed quite nicely with gems, secrets and items that will come into play in quests to come without feeling crowded or unnecessary. The only downside is that they are far too small. They still have a presentation about them that brought a smile or two. The game still looks fairly crisp and colorful, with its 2.5D worlds all still feeling well-crafted, vibrant and impressive. Even nostalgia cannot always blind players to the awful polygons writhing before them or the finicky controls most of us have long since tried to repress in our memories. In a final act of desperation, I dug through my old case of games and voila! There was my pink haired beauty, ready to go! Off I trudged to Amazon to see how much an English copy was and found nothing cheaper than at least fifty dollars – cripes. Unfortunately, the games were only available in Japanese and, try as I might, I couldn’t get through all of the challenges without being fluent. I was absolutely thrilled as Tomba 2: The Evil Swine Return was one of my childhood favorites. This was when the Minister for War, Sidney Herbert, stepped in and asked Florence Nightingale to arrange and take charge of nurses to send to the war. A reporter for the Times newspaper sent back several reports about the hospitals, and people in Britain started demanding something was done about them. They were not ready for how many soldiers would be injured, and this was one of the reasons why the hospitals were in such a bad state. When war broke out in the Crimea in 1854, the government expected it to last several months, it actually lasted 2 years. When she returned she became the superintendent of a hospital for gentlewomen in Harley Street, London. When Florence told her parents they were not happy as in their view, this was not a respectable profession.Įventually, her father gave his permission for her to go to Germany to train in 1844 in a hospital in Kaiserwerth, Germany. She came from a wealthy background was born in Italy and named after the city of her birth.Īs she grew up, she decided that she wanted to help the sick and injured, and wanted to become a nurse.
I tested the three drives I mentioned above in each enclosure: Intel’s 750 PCIe, Intel’s Optane 900P, and Samsung’s far more affordable 970 EVO. To flesh out the performance picture I used the two aforementioned enclosures: Akitio’s Thunder2 PCIe (a native Thunderbolt 2 product), and the Thunderbolt 3-based Akitio Node Lite. Thunderbolt 3 proved the panacea, with read/write rates that roughly equal what I’ve seen from the same drives mounted internally on Windows PCs. I also did a quick test on a friend’s 2015 MacBook Air with 20 Gbps Thunderbolt 2, and things really got moving with a healthy 1.2 GBps read/write rate. The Apple Thunderbolt adapter is required to use it on Thunderbolt 1 or 2 Macs.Īfter some head-scratching and other physical manifestations of frustration I won’t discuss, it occurred to me that the Intel 750, being an older enterprise product from the days of NVMe 1.1 (the NVMe spec is now up to 1.3) might need a firmware upgrade. If you want to future-proof with a Thunderbolt 3 PCIe enclosure, it needs to be one such as the Akitio Node Lite with a chip that Apple supports. Slower than SATA? Seriously Murphy? Akitio Node Lite/Intel 750 combo initially delivered on my iMac. Neither was I expecting the 350 MBps reading and writing that the Nice, but I certainly wasn’t expecting the same results on a Thunderbolt 1 port, with an adapter, and older 2nd generation Intel CPU in play. And there’s only a minor performance penalty with the adapter.Īkitio Thunder3 PCIe review with a 1.2TB Intel 750 NVMe PCIe SSD inside, the combo read at about 2 GBps and wrote at well over 1 GBps. Also, Thunderbolt is the future and performs much better on newer Macs. The issue here is that many Thunderbolt 2 boxes are reaching end of life. It’s completely compatible with Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 Macs. I should point out that I could’ve avoided all this with theĪkitio Thunder2 PCIe, which I later acquired for testing. Node Lite which uses TI’s newer 65983 (as does Akitio’s Node Pro) chip that Apple does support, and I was sure that NVMe bliss was nearly upon me. IDGĪpple doesn’t support the communications chip sported in many early NVMe PCIe enclosures such as the Thunder3 PCIe shown below. Any enclosure using this chip with throw the message you see below. The early-to-market models I tried initially-the aforementioned Aktio Thunder3 PCIe andĪkitio Node-work fine on Windows PCs, but they use TI’s 65982 communications chip, which predates Apple’s adoption of Thunderbolt 3. This adapter is fine for connecting Thunderbolt 2 devices to Thunderbolt 3 ports, but won’t work the other way around.Īfter the Apple adapter was in place, the next issue was Thunderbolt PCIe enclosure compatibility. The bi-directional Apple adapter does both. This experiment was the exact opposite, a Thunderbolt 3 device to a Thunderbolt 1 port. The $50 units from Akitio and Startech I tried initially were uni-directional in the wrong direction-they would only handle Thunderbolt 1 or 2 devices attached to a Thunderbolt 3 port. At the time of this writing, Apple’s Thunderbolt adapter was the only one available that allows you to successfully use Thunderbolt 3 devices on a Thunderbolt 1 or 2 port. That's background noise, the indistinct chatter of others in public places. Likewise, if there's a TV, and a reporter is talking, and your character is engaged with it, you need to provide all the dialogue. DON'T EXPECT ACTORS TO INVENT THEIR OWN DIALOGUE, NEWSCASTS, COMMERCIALS, OR SONGS If a character is 'on the phone' in a scene, the reader needs to know what that character is saying. Just say 'She leaves' and then - if it's important - show us where she's going through the judicious use of a new slug line.Īs a general rule: if a viewer can't see it, it doesn't belong in action. Likewise, if the slug line says we're in the living room, and a character leaves said living room, don't tell us in the action that she's heading for the bathroom. Action is not the place to tell us that 'Alan quit law school to go to work for the phone company' or that 'Gina is a lovely girl but sort of a slut.' You will need to reveal this through dialogue, setting, character, etc. DON'T USE ACTION TO GIVE US BACKSTORY ON CHARACTER Seriously. DON'T SNEAK IN HUGE SET PIECES WITH NO INTRODUCTION If we're in a desert, don't all of a sudden say, 'They arrive at the house' without alerting the reader about 'a house in the distance' (usually with a helpful new POV or ANGLE ON). Intros don't have to be elaborate they just have to exist before the character speaks. IF YOU DON'T INTRO A CHARACTER IN ACTION FIRST, HE/SHE DOESN'T EXIST Just as you can't all of a sudden have a character dive into a swimming pool in the middle of a living room without establishing it first (you knew that, right?), you can't all of a sudden give a character a name and dialogue without introducing her in the action. If you tend to be spare with descriptions, and it's a time cut, you can say "Bob and Nancy, as before." But you don't just start in with dialogue. It doesn't matter if your only characters in the script are Bob and Nancy. ACTION ALWAYS SEPARATES THE TWO Action tells the director and other interested parties (i.e., the entire crew) which characters inhabit this brand-new scene. That's why it's an art form.) DIALOGUE NEVER FOLLOWS A SLUG LINE. YOU have to make the conversation sound believable while still giving us the information/conflict that we need. In other words, they did not simply freeze in place for our benefit between one slug line and the other. When we meet up with them again (an INT to EXT, say, or between floors), we have to assume that - just as in real life - their conversation has continued even if we weren't there to witness it. (If action and dialogue are concurrent and not consecutive, then you put Taking off his shoes and coat: with Fred's line following.) CHARACTERS DON'T DIE AND THEN RESUSCITATE BETWEEN SLUG LINES Let's say two characters are in the middle of a conversation and get into an elevator, or walk out a door. Action, in other words, creates pauses between words. So if Maggie asks Fred, 'How are you?' and Fred takes off his coat and shoes before saying 'Fine,' Maggie might be justifiably annoyed. If a character says a line, and a second character responds, realize that any action between that first line and the response also counts as real time. That means characters cannot take showers, put on makeup, floss, wait 'a few moments' for another character, listen to an entire record, watch an entire TV show, eat an entire meal, or 'at times' trip, hop, skip, or sing - unless we are also there watching the whole time, like an old Yoko Ono experimental film. ONCE YOU ARE BETWEEN SLUG LINES, YOU'RE IN REAL TIME That means if it takes your character two pages to do something, that's approximately two minutes of real time. EXT is not 'outside' in the hall, 'outside' another office, 'outside' sister's room, etc. Don't piss off the cinematographer by confusing an indoor scene with an outdoor scene. AN "EXT"IS AN ACTUAL OUTSIDE The point of EXT/INT in the slug line is to tell the cinematographer what to light. In other words, the overall vibe of the place goes in action, not slug line. Supers, also called Titles, give details such as '1959' or 'Howard's First Day at Camp.' Give them their own line below the slug line.Īction can bear the weight of more complicated scenarios: the fact that a town is 'gritty' or 'bucolic,' or what have you. DON'T PUT YEARS, DETAILED LOCATIONS, ETC., IN THE SLUG LINE. In its latest release, Breitling declares that the Chronomat’s time has come again, bigger and bolder than ever. It was a daring move, and with its big, bold design cues, it was the perfect sports watch of its time. It was from this watch that the original Chronomat was born in 1984, a mechanical chronograph flying in the face of the prevailing quartz-movement revolution. The watch was as bold as anything from the era, perfectly suitable for piloting a Bertone-designed Lamborghini, as well as a fighter jet. But the Navitimer is hardly the only aviation-themed watch in their history.īack in the 1980s, Breitling created a special edition watch for the pilots of the famed Italian Air Force aerobatic jet squadron, the Frecce Tricolore. Their original Navitimer is arguably the most iconic pilot’s watch of all time.
